Brookhaven High School Juniors Achieve Major ACT® Score Improvements in February

Brookhaven Most Improved Students

75 percent of students with a prior score improved an average of +2.6 composite points utilizing Jumpstart Test Prep

Jumpstart Test Prep recently released the ACT® improvement results from Brookhaven High School (BHS), whose junior class used the program to prepare for the state-administered February 2021 ACT® exam (American College Testing). Following completion of Jumpstart's complete ACT prep review, 75 percent of the students with a prior ACT score improved an average +2.6 points above their best prior attempt. Similarly, the school had nearly 70 percent of its students improving their prior English sub-scores by an average of +3.45 points, 78 percent improving their Math sub-scores by an average of +2.25 points. "The bad timing of school outage due to the ice storm cost us the last few important review days before testing," said Stacy Walker, Brookhaven High School principal. Although some portions of the reading and science reviews were unavoidably not completed in the classroom, 67 percent improved by an average of +3.46 points in Reading and 44% of students improved in the Science sub-score area an average 4.13 points. "Our team worked hard with our students to help them achieve, and we are proud of their efforts and results," Walker continued.

Marisa Redmond, one of the College and Career Readiness teachers at BHS who taught the Jumpstart program, says, "From a teacher's perspective…I was blown away by how great they did. The program is simple to use." Sandra Banks also led the review from her classroom and had similar comments: "I think the program is a great review and provides the practice students need to achieve. One student told me, 'I paid attention, did the work, and increased my English assessment score by +16 points.'" Coach Aaron King is another teacher who led the Jumpstart Review. "It was a significant advantage for our students to have had Jumpstart Test Prep at their disposal. I told them every day that they didn't realize how lucky they were to be provided with this tutorial review program. Jumpstart is an important key to student success on this important exam."

Students also provided their thoughts about the program. On her third ACT® attempt, BHS junior Kaytlin Humphreys improved her math sub-score +7 points and improved her composite score +2 points over her two best prior attempts.  She tells future students, "It is a good review of things I've learned but forgotten. Pay attention. It (Jumpstart Test Prep) does actually help so just try your best." BHS junior Ajani Thompson agrees, as his English sub-score rose +9 points, and he improved his composite score +4 points over his prior attempt. "Jumpstart really did help. It reviewed things that were very blurry to me - like things learned in the 7th and 8th grades. It helped me polish up on what I already knew. It's definitely worth paying attention to."

Jumpstart Test Prep is an online review program based on over 60 years of work by Dot McClendon, a legendary educator and Mississippi's 19-year STAR teacher hall-of-fame inductee. "As a teacher at The Mississippi School of the Arts and several other schools during my career, I was able to help guide the preparation of students in person," said McClendon. "Now through our online, on-demand video review, students in BHS classrooms, as well as classrooms around the country, around the breakfast table, or on the couch at home, are able to benefit from our approach."

All juniors at BHS had access to the following resources:

  • Expert content review and practice, along with test-taking tips and strategies delivered in the classroom via streaming video
  • Online, on-demand, 24-hour review (36 modules, approximately 40 minutes each) of English, Math, Reading, and Science content tested by the ACT® that could be led from the classroom or used individually by students
  • Consumable student workbooks for each subject area to be completed in conjunction with lecture content and later used as a student study guide
  • Online assessments for the Math and English review areas which linked students back to their weaker areas reviewed in the Jumpstart module content

School administrators utilized an online dashboard reflecting the video module completion progress of teachers assigned to proctor the review and/or individual student progress.
